 makes 18 bars

filling: 3/4 cup water
         1/4 cup brown sugar
           1 <8 oz> package of chopped dates

crust: 1 cup flour
         1 cup quick cooking oats
         1/2 cup brown sugar
         1/2 cup butter, softened

in a 1 quart saucepan, combine water, 1/4 cup brown sugar and dates. cook over medium high heat , stirring occasionally, until mixture thickens <4 to 5 minutes>. cool to room temperature. heat oven to 350 degrees. in large mixer bowl, combine all crust ingredients. beat on low speed until mixture is crumbly <1 to 2 minutes>
RESERVE ONE CUP press remaining crumbs into a greased 9 inch square baking pan. spoon filling over crust; sprinkle with reserved crumbs.
bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until edges are lightly browned
